Proverbs 22:1a”

“A good name is better than fine perfume,

Ecclesiastes 7:1a”

The word Name is very, very prominent throughout the scriptures! It appears 944 times in the American Standard Version, 934 times in the New King James Version, 928 times in the King James Version, and 761 times in the New International Version. Lets take a moment or two to examine some names that just may prove interesting to you.

First, let’s look at the name Jehovah or Yahweh. Jehovah or Yahweh is one of the most important names for God in the Old Testament. The name is derived from the verb “to be,” meaning simply but profoundly, “I am who I am,” and “I will be who I will be.” The four-letter Hebrew word YHWH (thecHebrew letters are void of vowels), was the name by which God revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). This bush was a vivid symbol of the inexhaustible dynamism of God who burns like a fire with love and righteousness, yet remains the same and never diminishes. Some English translations of the Bible translate the word as Jehovah, while others use Yahweh.

Now that we know what God’s name is, let’s add some attributes and see who God becomes to believers. To Abraham and Isaac on Mt. Moriah He became, JEHOVAH JIREH. This means Jehovah will see or provide (Genesis 22:14). In Genesis 22:8 Abraham had said, “Elohim will provide for Himself a Lamb.” Abraham perceives he has uttered an unconscious prophecy, and that the Elohim in whom he trusted has proved Himself JEHOVAH (which sees), in covenant with His people. The phrase ‘In the mount Jehovah will provide” became a Hebrew proverb. As He provided for Abraham in his extremity, for us also is our Jehovah ready and able to provide for us in our every extremity. The meaning of Mori-jah, “the seeing of Jehovah” implies that it originated in this saying of Abraham, and that “Moriah” in Genesis 22:2 is used by anticipation. Moreover, Solomon built his temple on mount “Moriah”.

JEHOVAH NISSI

“Jehovah my banner” is the name given by Moses to the altar commemorating Israel’s victory, under Jehovah, over King Amalek. His name, i.e. “manifested character” toward His people, is their rallying point. The rod or banner of God in Moses’ hand, when held up as a banner, brought to the people of God victory. So it was the pledge of what the altar represented, that Jehovah is the insurer of victory to His people when rallying round Him.

JEHOVAH-SHALOM

“Jehovah is peace” Gideon so-called his altar of thanksgiving (not sacrifice) in Ophrah, to commemorate the angel of Jehovah’s salutation, “Peace be unto thee”; where rather judgment for national backslidings was to have been expected, and when he himself had feared death, as having seen the angel of Jehovah. Jehovah’s assurance of “peace” confirmed His previous announcement that Gideon would conquer Midian and deliver Israel.

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH

“Jehovah-shammah” - This phrase expresses the truth that “The-LORD-Is-There,” referring to the city which the prophet Ezekiel saw in his vision.

JEHOVAH-TSEBAOTH

“Jehovah-tsebaoth - This name, translated “The-LORD-of-hosts,” was used in the days of David and the prophets, witnessing to God the Savior who is surrounded by His hosts of heavenly power.

JEHOVAH ELOHE ISRAEL

“Jehovah Elohe Israel -This name means “LORD-God-of-Israel,” and it appears in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the Psalms.

Other names similar to this are Netsah Israel,” The Strength of lsraef and Abir Yisrael” The Mighty One of Israel’.

And lastly there is a name given by God to God that is above every name given, the name Jesus. This is the name that assures us our Salvation, our Redemption, our Justification, our Sanctification, and our eventual Glorification. And where do we find this name, Philippians 2:9-11-

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

These are just a few of the many, many names relative to God in the scriptures. Why don’t you spend some time in the near future searching and digging to see how many names you are able to find.

Until next time…

We have, and are thoroughly enjoying the journey God is ordering for us. Every day, every week, every month, every year, new and exciting avenues open up to us, and we are the better for them. We feel just like the eleventh hour workers that Jesus spoke about in one of His many parables.

The story goes thusly; there were some day laborers standing in the usual place to be hired, but could not catch on to a job all the day. It seems they had stood there desiring to be hired but no one would take the chance on them. The hours began to pass; the 3rd hour, the 6th hour, the 9th hour, and finally the eleventh or final hour approached and arrived. Although some were picked to go to work at each interval, still some remained unhired. The good man of the vineyard returned at the eleventh hour and those still standing and unhired were given the opportunity to go in and work, and so they did.

Therefore, we very much consider ourselves eleventh hour laborers, because many of
our years were spent in the marketplace of idleness. But the LORD saw fit to offer us the opportunity to come and work for Him, to toil for Him, to serve Him, to live for Him, and we can say today that we have not regretted a moment of being used by the LORD.

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the Day of Judgment, because in this world we are like Him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us.

I love what I do, because I am doing what I love. Teaching God’s people what it truly means to be in love with Him fills my heart with joy unspeakable. No matter how challenging or critical the teaching becomes, it’s my great pleasure to be on the giving end of exposition. Teach me o’ LORD, that I may teach others is my credo. As we learn about God’s unfailing, untiring, unwavering, undeniable love, we too, should come to the consensus that God is love.

My, my, my, can you believe Mt. Zion that it’s been ten years and still counting, where is the time going. God in His word to us wants us to come to Him in love; not just trouble time love, but all the time, anytime love. Not just when things are going bad should we call on Him, but in the days of sunshine as well. God needs to be such a part of our lives that anytime is the right time for prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.

There is a song that says I love the Lord, He heard my cry, and pitied every groan, long as I live and troubles rise, I’ll hasten to His throne; right Miss Chantay? Understanding that the love of God is always present in our lives is wonderful to know. Hastening to Him is what we can and should always be willing to do. The Apostle John says to us in his letter that we can have complete confidence in knowing that God is perfectly in love with each of us. The King James Version reads, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: 1 John 4:18.

This year has been, and continues to be a great challenge for us, but God’s love for us, and in us has the capability to sustain us, keep us going, and to see us through it all. I am so glad to know that in God via Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Ghost, we have a true friend, a constant companion, and an impeccable confidant. We can all say without a shadow of a doubt, “Yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me, for the Bible tells me so.

Again, as Pastor, it continues to be my pleasure to serve as Under Shepherd to one of the greatest congregations on earth. You are dynamite, TNT, Nitroglycerin all rolled into one. And I still need your help to blow down some walls in love. Come on, let’s blow down the wall of hate, let’s blow down the wall of envy, hey, let’s blow down the wall of malice and strife, how about this one, the wall of jealousy, it’s got to be blown clean clear away. The Bible teaches that we cannot conquer evil with hate, but with love. So let us LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Until next time!
